A Word from JA of Coastal SC President Chad Vail

The recent volatility on Wall Street and in Wasington DC has us all wondering what has happened to our free market economy, the very system we espouse as the one most equitable and most empowering for the individual, and the one we most closely associate with democracy.

What brought us to this point?  Though the answer is very complex, every expert will acknowledge the Great Depression was directly related to personal financial literacy, capacity, and responsibility.  We can, and must, teach the next generation to do better.

There has never been a time more critical for the mission of JA: educating and inspiring our young people to value free enterprise, business, and economics to improve the quality of their lives.  It is critical that we teach America's youth how to earn, save, and budget--how to manage credit--how to control their personal finances rather than vice versa. The youth we educate today will be our employee, customer, small business owner, or political leader tomorrow, which makes what you do as volunteer, donor, or board member, more important than ever.

Junior Achievement of Coastal SC supports the Charleston Regional Development Alliance's Opportunity Next Plan to align our region's community development, workforce development and economic development initiatives.

Why It Works

Sequential, age-appropriate curriculum - Comprehensive and sequential (yet independent) programs targeted to elementary, middle and high school students; a strong belief that financial concepts can be taught early so that positive habits are developed; children as young as 4 or 5 can start learning about finance.

Hands-on/experiential learning - Programs seek to engage students through hands-on, experiential activities and concepts that link to real-world application—today and in the future.

Business savvy resources - An extensive volunteer delivery network—from business and education professionals to JA alumni, who contribute relevancy and real-world knowledge to the student learning experience.

Global presence and reach - Presence in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, South America, and the United States. Cross-cultural collaboration and learning better prepares youth to understand and contribute to the global economy.

Public and private partnerships - Collaborates with local and global businesses, NGOs, foundations, educational institutions and community organizations; leverages their knowledge, experience and influence to inspire young people through "real world" educational experiences that prepare them to become contributing members of the global society.
