After we receive your JA Classroom Volunteer Sign-Up
Form, we will do our best to match your preferences with
the classroom requests from area teachers.
-
New Classroom Volunteers have a brief orientation, usually
when they pick up their JA Kit. At this orientation, we will review the program materials and JA
policies. You will also receive your materials and teacher information. We also have online
training available, check out our "Training for the Classroom" page.
-
After the orientation you will need to contact your
teacher as soon as
possible to make arrangements to visit the
classroom.
-
You are encouraged to visit with the teacher before your
first JA visit with the students. This is a time to find the school, parking, understand school
visitor policies and find where the classroom is located.
-
You and the teacher will need to work out the times for the
JA visits. The visits need to be completed before the end of the semester.
-
The teacher should remain in the classroom with you at all times. The teacher is the
one to provide discipline and help you guide the students to understanding the material and activities
you are bringing to the classroom. You are the business/community guest to the classroom; the teacher
is the professional instructor.
-
If for some reason you are unable to keep your appointment
for your JA visit, please call the
teacher as soon as possible. The teacher has
worked your visit into the lesson plans for the day and will need to make other arrangements. You
should reschedule for another visit during your call to avoid multiple follow-up calls which will lead to
frustration for you and your teacher, and will cause the children to wonder why you stopped coming to visit
them.
-
Please plan to turn in any unused materials, all pre
& post tests, and your evaluation form at the completion of your volunteer
commitment.
What does Junior Achievement do?
Junior Achievement is a program that uses hands-on activities to help young
people understand the economics of life. In partnership with business and educators, Junior Achievement brings
the real world to students, opening their minds to their potential.
What do Junior Achievement Volunteers do?
JA volunteers bring a real world perspective to classrooms in our community.
As a Classroom Volunteer, you will lead discussions and activities to encourage teamwork and leadership
skills.
What other responsibilities does a JA Volunteer
have?
Each school year, volunteers must sign and abide by Junior Achievement's
Volunteer Conduct Policy. Classroom Volunteers follow lesson plans and activities developed by JA and add their
unique experiences. After the last class session, the JA Volunteer completes and submits their evaluation of
the classroom experience.
What is the time commitment for JA
Volunteers?
After JA Volunteers are given their JA Program Materials Kit, they contact
their assigned classroom teacher to establish the visiting schedule that is best for all concerned - Typically,
at an agreed day & time on consecutive weeks. Some volunteers may be able to visit more than once a
week.
What are the typical outcomes from a JA Classroom Volunteer
Experience?
The positive impact a JA Volunteers can have on the students in their class is
priceless – you never know when a future community leader will be soaking up important financial literacy
skills. The relationship created with your students as your instruction sessions go by promotes meaningful
experiential learning and accountability. Be assured - the feeling of accomplishment after completing your
first JA classroom experience typically leads to signing up for another class!
